Identity Theft Investigation

Tax Identity theft is a form of fraud in which someone pretends to be someone else by assuming that person's identity in order to obtain tax benefits in that person's name. As a result, the victim of identity theft (i.e. the person whose identity has been assumed by the identity thief) can suffer unwanted tax burdens, if he or she is held accountable for the perpetrator's actions.
If you receive a notice or letter in the mail from the IRS that leads you to believe that someone may have used your Social Security number fraudulently, please call us immediately for help. Specifically, be alert to possible identity theft if the letter or notice contains the following:

  • states more than one tax return was filed for you, or
  • indicates you received wages from an employer unknown to you

An identity thief might also use your Social Security number to file a tax return in order to receive a refund. If the thief files the tax return before you do, the IRS will believe you already filed and received your refund if eligible.
If your Social Security number is stolen, it may be used by another individual to get a job. That person’s employer would report income earned to the IRS using your Social Security number, making it appear that you did not report all of your income on your tax return.
Our tax team is prepared to fully investigate your identity theft complain and restore your name and your reputation in the community by bringing the perpetrator to justice. Please contact us at 1-855-GSA-TAXHELP (1-855-472-8294).
